The electricity sector is undergoing major transformation. Remote metering, monitoring, and advanced data management will play a key role in improving efficiency, safety, and innovation. At Elewit, we therefore believe that the best way to tackle these challenges is through collaboration and knowledge exchange with key ecosystem players.
That’s why, in partnership with Red Eléctrica, we’re launching a new challenge aimed at companies in the smart meter manufacturing sector. This is an open and collaborative initiative to explore and test the features that the new generations of smart meters should include.
Exploring a new protocol for remote metering
The goal of this process is to analyse and evaluate the potential of the DLMS/COSEM protocol as an alternative to the current IEC-870-5-102 protocol. This applies to metering points with more than 450 kW or those that are read directly by Red Eléctrica..
Smart meters will need to respond to the following test requests via the DLMS/COSEM protocol:
- Date and time
- QH measurements
- Synchronisation
- Device configuration (e.g., serial number, CT/VT ratios)
- Optionally: signed QH data (upload and verification) and geolocation
We’re looking for smart meter manufacturers with at least one device with conformity assessment under Royal Decree 1110/2007 who are interested in joining this technological validation and open collaboration process.
Participating companies will need to install at least one remotely connected device at their facilities, using a simplified DLMS/COSEM protocol configuration provided by Red Eléctrica.
How to participate
If you’d like to participate in the ‘Next Generation of Smart Meters’ challenge, registration is open until 24 June. Just fill out the available registration form and accept the legal terms and conditions.
Once registration closes, participating companies will move on to the proposal development phase, which will run from 1 to 18 July. Selected proposals will then go forward to the final testing phase, scheduled to take place between 1 September and 31 October.
In addition to contributing to the analysis and evolution of the metering system, selected companies will gain visibility on Elewit’s website and social media. They’ll also have the opportunity to take part in webinars and other outreach activities to showcase their capabilities to other key ecosystem players.
