Elewit and TECNALIA successfully test 50 km quantum communication link to advance towards a smarter power grid

Elewit, Redeia’s technology platform, and TECNALIA, Spain’s largest private centre for applied research and technological development, have conducted a second QKD (Quantum Key Distribution) proof of concept. The trial successfully established an optical fibre communication link spanning approximately 50 kilometres in an industrial environment, connecting two electrical sub-stations located between the municipalities of Itsaso (Gipuzkoa) and Vitoria-Gasteiz (Álava).

Redeia receives an international award for promoting open and collaborative innovation among European TSOs

Redeia, parent company of Red Eléctrica and Elewit, has been named one of the Top 100 Corporate Startup Stars (CSS) 2025. This international recognition is awarded by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and Mind the Bridge to the world's most active and impactful organisations in open innovation and collaboration with the startup ecosystem. The award ceremony took place yesterday, 2 December, in Paris during the 10th edition of the Corporate Startup Stars.

The Spanish Technology Platform for Electricity Grids, Futured, is promoted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation through the State Research Agency. It was established in October 2005 with the aim of fostering the technological development of the electricity grid to achieve the objectives of the energy transition. 

Elewit, in collaboration with Red Eléctrica and SAPREM, performs a field test of a prototype of a semi-automatic spiral bird guard dismantling system.

Bird guards are devices that improve the visibility and detection of power lines by birds, reducing the likelihood of collision with them.  Red Eléctrica, thanks to both its commitment to the conservation of birdlife and as part of its compliance with current law, installs various types of these devices on its lines to improve the safety and protection of birdlife.

The goal is to drive innovation in the operational processes of the electricity and telecommunications sectors, where the company operates.
